Non-olim usually arrive on a work visa (B/1), a student visa (A/2) or as the spouse of a citizen. Your visa determines your access to healthcare and your right to work, so settle it before booking a lift.

Finding and signing an Israeli rental.

Long-term rentals are advertised in rooms rather than bedrooms, and the number includes the living room. Expect to pay agent fees, provide guarantors, and sign in Hebrew, so have the contract reviewed.

Private cover versus the national system.

Without residency you are not automatically covered. Most employers arrange private health insurance; check waiting periods and pre-existing condition clauses carefully.

Getting connected in your first days.

Israeli mobile plans are cheap and contract-free. You can order a SIM before arrival and activate it on landing; home internet needs both an infrastructure provider and an ISP.

A Rav Kav card covers buses, trains and light rail. Outside the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem corridor a car becomes much more useful.

Employees are taxed at source; freelancers register as an osek patur or osek murshe. A local accountant is worth the fee in year one.
